Protecting the environment and working with communities

We are committed to working with Traditional Owners, stakeholders, landowners and the community to ensure Great Southern Offshore Wind delivers the best outcomes for communities and the environment.

A Careful & Considered Approach

The project will go through a thorough environmental assessment and approvals process before the offshore wind development can be constructed.

With infrastructure located in Commonwealth and Victorian jurisdictions, the project will be referred to both Commonwealth and State environmental authorities for assessment and approval. It is likely an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be required under the Commonwealth EPBC Act and an Environment Effects Statement (EES) under the Environment Effects Act 1978 (Vic). Documents prepared under those processes will be considered by Government as part of the project's detailed approval and environment impact assessment process.

It will take us approximately four years to collect the information required for the approval process, which includes consultation and engagement with key stakeholders and community.

This consultation process will allow us to:

Fully scope the environmental assessment methodology

Collect relevant data to understand existing conditions

Assess the potential effects of the development and identify appropriate measures to reduce impacts.

Great Southern Offshore Wind will look to partner with stakeholders, universities and key research organisations to design and scope our surveys, as well as promote important environmental research beyond the project’s construction phase well into the operational phase.

Working with the community

The Great Southern Offshore Wind team will work with stakeholders, landowners and the community during the development of the project to ensure the project delivers the best outcomes for the community and environment.
