Providing A wind-
driven future
We are currently exploring the suitability of an offshore wind development off the Bass Coast in Gippsland. Site investigations commenced in 2022 to assess the feasibility of the development. We will engage with stakeholders and the community throughout this process.
While no project boundary has been defined at this early stage, we do know that the project site will be at least 10 km from any coastline, and 20 km from Phillip Island and 30 km from Wilsons Promontory, at their closest points.
gROUNDED IN gIPPSLAND
Preliminary investigations have identified that the Bass Coast in Gippsland benefits from high wind speeds and favourable marine conditions which suit the development of offshore wind.
Gippsland’s outstanding track record as an energy producer – with both conventional and renewable energy in the region – means there are existing assets such as terminal stations and transmission lines allowing for quicker and easier connection to the energy grid.
Great Southern Offshore Wind recognises the potential in tapping into the existing skills and experience from these industries to support the development, construction and operation of the project.
Great Southern Offshore Wind aims to leave a lasting legacy in the Bass Coast and Gippsland, and looks forward to working closely with stakeholders and communities to ensure the project’s benefits reach everyone.
Gippsland is located in southern Victoria, Australia
A six year development
It takes over six years to develop an offshore wind farm. Great Southern Offshore Wind is early in the feasibility assessment stage. The key phases of developing an offshore wind farm, which can occur concurrently at times, are listed here:
FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT
2-4 years assesing the projects feasibility
Environmental reports and consent
2-3 years securing environmental and planning approvals
Engineering and procurement
2-3 years finalising engineering design and securing contractors for construction
Construction
2-4 years including manufacturing with on and offshore construction
Operations
Offshore windfarms have around 25+ years of operation
